Pony Express
An American tale from the end of the 19th century claims the donut was invented by accident during a postal transport. Johnny Fry worked on the back of a horse, delivering mail for the Pony Express between St Joseph and Seneca in Canada. Because he had to hurry he couldn’t stop very often despite the route being 500 miles either way. He would only stop for women. Soon young women lined Johnny’s route with cakes in their hands. Johnny would snap up the cookies without stopping. It’s not hard to guess what shape the cakes were so that he could most easily take them with him.
